Zadar is city situated on the Dalmatian coast between Rijeka and Split. Zadar was an old Illyrian settlement that dates back to the 9th century. The Zadar peninsula still preserves very old network of narrow and charming city streets, as well as a Roman forum dating back to the first century AD, and is fortified with medieval walls. The pre-Romanesque Church of St. Donat is one of Zadar's most famous monuments.
Throughout history, Zadar was the centre of key Croatian and Dalmatian cultural events. Here is where first Croatian university was established in 1936 and first Croatian newspaper was published in Zadar. Today Zadar is the administrative, tourist and cultural center of the region that includes four national parks, a 1,200 km long seacoast, and approximately 300 small and large islands.
